“From the early 1940s until her death in 1961, Maya Deren evoked and exemplified the America avant-garde movement virtually by herself. Her first film, Meshes of the Afternoon, set the tone for the decade and linked the movement to the older European avant-garde films of Cocteau and Buñuel.” – Cecile Starr

Join us for a night of 6 shorts by the legendary Maya Deren. Film selection includes: Meshes of the Afternoon (1943-59), At Land (1944), A Study of Choreography for Camera (1945), Ritual in Transfigured Time (1945-6), Meditation on Violence (1948), The Very Eye of Night (1952-59). All screened on VHS.

Throughout this body of work, distinct attention is given to the inner dialogues of thought and the tactile experiences of women. Considered as portraits, her subjects do not reside in isolation, but move in conversation with their surroundings and with the interactive circuits of the filmmaker.
