THURSDAY, AUGUST 31 - HEATHER HARKINS PRESENTS - 8PM Join our August Artist is residence (Heather Harkins) as she curates a night of films and videos that excite, inspire and motivate her to create. She will also be premiering her new work created while in residence here in Los Angeles. THURSDAY, SEPTEMER 7 - AUGUST IN THE EMPIRE STATE - 8PM The 2004 Presidential Election was one of the most politically divisive moments in recent?American history. Amidst the division, the Republican Party held its first ever convention?in New York City, a potent symbol for both President Bush and the local progressives energized to defeat him. Using the convention and the animated reaction of New Yorkers as its backdrop, August in the Empire State delves into the forgotten debate over the growth of poverty in America. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 - BOB SMITH USA - 8PM Bob Smith, U.S.A. is a hilarious new documentary film by Neil Abramson that provides a view into American culture through the eyes of seven men named Bob Smith. The filmmakers traveled across the United States documenting the lives of all the Bob Smith‚s. Despite their common names, the men vary greatly in profession, age and religion - from septic tank repairman to yoga instructor; from twenty eight to eighty-eight years old; from Evangelical Christian to Evangelical Atheist. As each man‚s story unfolds in their own words, intimate portraits are drawn; creating a poetic, non-judgmental and highly entertaining document of American life. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 - ELASTIC IMAGINATION (A NIGHT OF CONTEMPORARY FICTION) - 8PM "Elastic Imagination" is an event where local fiction writers can showcase their latest projects to their friends and neighbors. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 - FILMMAKER‚S ALLIANCE - 8PM Our brother‚s and sisters at Filmmaker‚s Alliance (FA) presents their monthly film saloon. Come see what contemporary narrative filmmakers are doing with their spare time. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 - YOUTH ORIENTATION FOR FALL CLASSES - 8PM Are you between 13 - 19 years of age and looking to make beautiful movies? Let us guide you into the world of cinematic wonder! All interested youth must attend this orientation with a parent or guardian. Classes begin promptly @ 4PM Thursday, September 21 and meet once a week for 8 weeks. ALL CLASSES ARE FREE AND NO CHILD WILL BE TURNED AWAY! SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 - INTRO TO DIGITAL EDITING WORKSHOP - NOON Calling all interested adults (ages 18 to 65) looking to learn the beauty and grace of digital editing on the computer. Class covers basic videotaping, importing sounds and images, working with iMovie and outputting to a DVD. Class limited to 5 students and there is a $50 fee, which is tax deductible and used to subsidize the FREE youth and senior classes. Email or call to reserve a spot. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 - NEIGHBORS FOR PEACE & JUSTICE FILM SERIES- 4PM Join us for our monthly matinee series of political film work. New community curators Neighbors for Peace and Justice, present films encouraging us to think and act. This month they will be screening the powerful film SIR! NO SIR!. This is a film that challenges deeply-held beliefs not just about the Vietnam War and those who fought it, but about the world we live in today. It is a vivid portrayal of William Faulkner‚s famous observation that „The past isn‚t dead; it isn‚t even past.‰ Filmmaker David Zeigler will be in attendance to discuss the film. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 - TRIP DOWN MARKET STREET 1905/2005 - 8PM On September 24, 2005 over 1,000 people joined together in the newly created Organ Pavilion Park across the street from the Ferry Building to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the film A Trip Down Market 1905. Tonight is a celebration of Bay Area filmmaking featuring experimental and historical films tracing the evolution of Market Street. Directed by Liz Keim and Melinda Stone (IN ATTENDANCE). FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 - RURAL ROCK & ROLL (Encore Screening) - 8PM Despite its location six hours north of the nearest city (San Francisco), this evolving community of colorful musicians in rural Humboldt County continues to pump out creative music--for themselves and for each other, making do with the limited rock resources available in the sticks--while the rest of the music world operates oblivious to their existence.
