THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5 – CHILDHOOD AND RELIGION - 8PM Award winning filmmaker John Cannizzaro screens a selection of his films that
explore themes of childhood and religion. Whether it be a child inventing
his own private rituals (Critical Mass, ’96), the
violence of history hidden behind religious ideals (America The Beautiful, ’05),
or a young mind’s final, fantastic battle between good and evil (Gulliver’s
Travels, ’02), Cannizzaro’s films constantly underscore
the relationship between a child’s play and the birth of religious
thinking. These ideas and the rituals that follow become a mysterious process
through which a child reconciles his mind with the world around him. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8 – CITY OF ANGELS AT LACMA CHILDREN’S FILM FESTIVAL - 6:45 PM Come on down to the LA County Museum of Art for a special screening of City of Angels, 20 short films about home and community made by the Spring 2005 EPFC youth filmmaking class. us as we celebrate the release of Golden Digest, Animal
Charm’s brand new DVD! “Animal Charm makes videos from other people's
videos. By compositing TV and reducing it to a kind of tic-ridden babble, they
force television to not make sense. While this disruption is playful, it also
reveals an overall 'essence' of mass culture that would not be apprehended
otherwise…. By forcing television to convulse like a raving lunatic,
we might finally hear what it is actually saying.” [Other Cinema] www.animalcharm.com FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27 – POLITICAL FILM NIGHT: ADIOS CHE – 7:30
PM SUNDAY, OCTOBER 29 – NEIGHBORS FOR PEACE & JUSTICE FILM SERIES – 4PM Conscientious Projector, a monthly matinee series of political film work, features films encouraging us to think and act followed by a lively discussion with filmmakers and activists. This month’s film is Why We Fight. Far beyond the headlines of various American military operations, Why We Fight moves to the deeper questions of why America seemingly is always at war. What are the forces—political, economic, and ideological—that drive us to clash against an ever-changing enemy? Just why does America fight? Unforgettable, powerful and at times disturbing. www.neighborsforpeaceandjustice.org |
