Film Friends: Series Continues February 17 with Adrian Cousins

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17 @ 10 AM Los Angeles, 6 PM London

FREE ONLINE EVENT!

Film Friends is a monthly series that brings established and emerging filmmakers together online for informal discussions on everything analog cinema. Series 1 features eco image-makers from around the world! Zoom in on February 17 — 10 AM LA time, 6 PM London time — as we continue the series in conversation with the king of custom chemistry: Adrian Cousins. Free event! All welcome!

From Adrian: I shoot Super 8 and 16mm film, hand processing it in custom chemistry. My work is consciously amateur, with a focus on recording life and moments, often focussing on the tiniest of details illuminated by transient natural light. I work in the spirit of Mekas’ statement “I make home movies – therefore I live. I live – therefore I make home movies.”

VIDEO_WAAAVES: Open-Source Video Synthesizer Tools

Join Andrei Jay on an introductory exploration into the intersections of video synthesis and chaos theory using their Video_Waaaves software suite! At the end of this workshop you will have learned the fundamentals of working with real time video feedback, video mixing, and video synthesis systems in general, along with gaining an intuitional knowledge of nonlinear dynamical systems without having to even glance at a single differential equation! No technical experience in mathematics, coding, or video worlds is necessary, just a desire to learn and some kind of a computer built in the last 12 or so years (osx and windows only for this workshop, chromebooks, ipads, and linux are beyond the scope of this course).

Unix for Artists: Fun with FFMPEG

The organizing principle behind the "Unix philosophy" is to take small, singularly-focused applications and use them in concert to create complex, powerful problem-solving tools. In this workshop we will explore FFMPEG and other free, open-source applications as building blocks for making and manipulating video art. Through demonstrations with practical examples participants can try at home we will explore FFMPEG's features for transcoding, resizing, editing, applying effects and more. Using it in conjunction with ImageMagick, Processing, Youtube-dl and more, we demonstrate how this powerful application can be a part of your personal art practice whether you are an animator, editor, programmer or just having fun on the computer.
