Saturday, April 1 - Elastic Imagination – 8PM Elastic Imagination is a semi-regular event where local fiction writers showcase their latest projects to friends and neighbors as part of an evening of live readings mixed with music and multimedia. A dollar donation will get you a cold beverage; proceeds go to EPFC! Featured writers include Kara Hamer, Jen Richey, Brian Cousins, "Cruz/Uriaz/Baiza/Sykora" and Steve Abee. FREE EVENT! Wednesday, April 5 – Gregorio Rocha presents Acme & CO – 8pm Acme & Co tells the story of Felix and Edmundo Padilla, perhaps some of the last itinerant film exhibitors .It speculates on how Felix Padilla elaborated La Venganza de Pancho Villa, one of the most complex works of film compilation made in the silent era. By re-visiting the spaces where the film was shown in Coahuila and Texas, the film reflects on the role played by cinema in rural areas. As a conclusion, Acme and Co heralds Felix and Edmundo as the most brilliant pioneers of compilation cinema. Thursday, April 6 - Open Screen – 8PM Bring us your “poor, huddled films yearning to breath free” and we will screen them. Our quarterly celebration of local filmmakers is our version of an “open mic night”. We invite anyone to screen a film (10 minutes or less) at the Film Center. We can project Super 8, 16mm, VHS, DVD and MINI-DV. Call or email to reserve a spot. FILMMAKERS SCREENING WORK GET IN FREE. Thursday, April 13 - Birthday Cabaret – 8PM The Film Center’s very own Lisa Marr is having a birthday and we invite all of you who have been touched by her spirit to come and perform in celebration of this milestone. Bring a dessert and talent to share: sing, dance, show a film, read a poem or simply shout to the world your admiration and love for our dear friend! FREE EVENT! Friday, April 14 - Radio Pacifica/ Political Film Series – 8PM Join us for our monthly political film series with the folks at Radio Pacifica and KPFK. Film and filmmaker to be announced. Call or email for details. Monday, April 17 - Filmmakers Alliance – 7:30 PM Our friends at FA (Filmmakers Alliance) present their bi-monthly showcase of contemporary independent filmmakers. They have graciously decided to donate 100% of the door back to the Film Center. Always a night of interesting new work and stimulating discussion! Thursday, April 20 - Billy Childish – 8PM Internationally acclaimed artist and musician Billy Childish will be at the Film Center to screen an assortment of his rarely seen films made with the Chatham Super 8 Cinema. Simple story lines, no lights, a second hand camera and no art. Monday April 24 – CineSalon – 7:30 PM Join us for our second in a monthly series curated by Cinewomen LA, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to increase the visibility of women in the entertainment industry by supporting emerging filmmakers through CineGroups, networking, & screenings. Cinewomen LA aims to help their members develop the skills necessary to tell compelling, enlightening and entertaining stories in movies and television. This event is FREE for Cinewomen Members; $5 suggested donation for the general public. Thursday, April 27 - Free Form Film Festival Presents OUT – 8PM OUT is a collection of outsider and incorrect film/video clips including excerpts from training videos, performances, advertisements, and television programs from the past 50 years curated by Tyrone Davies. Also screening is the premiere of the short experimental, "The Human Story." Based on a live performance of the same name, it is an intriguing example of how archival footage is being claimed and re-worked in contemporary cinema. CURATORS IN ATTENDANCE. Saturday, April 29 - EPFC Guest Lecture Series: Found Footage: 3-5PM Ryan Wylie of the Free Form Film Festival tells you everything you need to know about finding and reclaiming film footage. Wylie will be opening the FFFF vault and screening some of his favorite found footage shorts of the past 2 years. Be the first 3 people to sign up for this workshop and receive a data DVD full of found footage ripe for the edit. And if you edit your short by April 29th (using only footage from the DVD) you can show it at the workshop! FREE EVENT Sunday, April 30 - Conscientious Projector Presents Electile Dysfunction: 4PM Media activist groups Take Back The Media and People to People TV have joined together to produce Electile Dysfunction: Take Back Your Right to Vote, a documentary film chronicling voting issues leading up to and throughout the 2004 elections and how ordinary citizens can effect change to make sure votes count. Presented by Neighbors for Peace and Justice. |
