Film Friends is a monthly series that brings established and emerging filmmakers together online for informal discussions on everything analog cinema. Season 2 features image-makers from around the world in conversation on the theme SIMPLE MACHINES! Zoom in on Saturday, October 9 — 10 AM Pacific Time — as we flip out over flipbooks with the fabulous Ruth Hayes. Free event! All welcome!

Ruth Hayes came to animation through drawing and printmaking. She works in film, digital video and pre-cinema formats including flipbooks, zoetropes and praxinoscopes. A committed experimentalist, she has explored visual phenomena, engaged in historical and political critique, mined personal experience, and investigated relationships between human and non-human worlds. Her current work focuses on 16mm cameraless processes and expanded cinema performance. Since 1997 she has taught at The Evergreen State College, integrating animation into courses in cultural studies, the sciences, and visual and media arts.

OUTDOORS AT EPFC LOS ANGELES SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 20: 10 am – 3 pm Discover the joys of analog filmmaking with this fun, free, outdoor hands-on intro class to Super 8 and 16mm. We’ll learn about film history, camera mechanics and analogue cinematography techniques and then put our new knowledge into process as we shoot, process and project some film of our own using a Canon Super 8 camera and a 16mm Bolex camera. Workshop limited to 6 participants.
