Sunday, April 3 - ARTIST'S FILM & TELEVISION: NEW YORK 1975-1985 - 7:30 PM
These short films were made during a time when artists worked in as many media as possible, when cable television was a novelty and simplicity of means a virtue. An act of stealing is carried out in plain view; intrigue complicates personal relationships; poetry reconciles past and present; raw emotions drive punk rock music; women develop a fantasy of prehistoric culture. Samplers from collaboratively produced weekly public access television shows present facts and fiction. As Liza Béar writes, media is used "to symbolize, to amuse, to inform, to perform, to debunk, to demystify, to comment, to formally experiment, to shift gears, to analyze, to reveal, to investigate, to instigate an interaction....Like and unlike. It's the details of attitude and sensibility, emphasis and orientation that distinguish...."

Tuesday, April 5 – DOC CLASS SCREENING AND CALIFORNIA DREAMING – 8 PM
Join us for a special double bill: a celebration of short films on family and community stories by the Spring 2011 EPFC Intro to Documentary Filmmaking Class and the North American premiere of California Dreaming, a documentary by Dutch filmmaker, journalist and cultural essayist Bregtje van der Haak. California is a strong brand, the state of new beginnings, dreams and movie stars, of surfers and a wonderful climate. But the Golden State is bankrupt and the city of Los Angeles is running out of cash. In Los Angeles, we meet five people who are going through a transformation in their lives during this crisis. Justin and Christine lost their jobs and are now living in a van with their two young sons. Charles has gotten out of prison after fourteen years. Mizuko prepares her children for the future by making them at ease in virtual reality. Laura has taken advantage of the crisis by buying land cheaply and starting an urban farm and artists collective Fallen Fruit maps the abundant free "public fruit" available in the city. Thursday, April 7 – THE INDIAN BOUNDARY LINE: A FILM BY THOMAS COMERFORD – 8 PM
The Indian Boundary Line (2010) follows a road in Chicago, Rogers Avenue, that traces the 1816 Treaty of St. Louis boundary between the United States and “Indian Territory.” In doing so, it examines the collision between the vernacular landscape, with its storefronts, short-cut footpaths and picnic tables, and the symbolic one, replete with historical markers, statues, and fences. Through its observations and audio-visual juxtapositions, The Indian Boundary Line meditates on a span of land in Chicago about 12 miles long, but suggests how this land and its history are an index for the shifting inhabitants, relationships, boundaries and ideas of landscape – as well as the consequences – which have accompanied the transformation of the “New World.” FILMMAKER THOMAS COMERFORD IN ATTENDANCE!
Friday, April 8 – TWIN: LOS ANGELES RIVER ARMADA – 8 PM
Twin: Los Angeles River Music Armada is a documentary about TWIN, an Alt-Folk band from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. TWIN is the ongoing music project lead by singer/guitarist David Fort. This past year the project has found it's footing with permanent members: Lesley Brown, Ally Leenhouts and David Enns. Friends that joined TWIN on their journey include Eva Klassen and Filmmaker Danny Louangxay. Dave Fort and Lesley Brown will be present for the screening and perform a 20-minute music set after the film. The Los Angeles River Music Armada Started on February 17, 2011 at the headwaters of the Los Angeles River and paddling down to Long Beach playing shows along the way over a span of 3 days. Saturday, April 9 – CINEMA INDIGENE PRESENTS BARKING WATER – 8PM
Cinema Indigene, EPFC’s new monthly screening of contemporary Native American made cinema presents Barking Water. Before Oklahoma was a red state, it was known as the Land of the Red People, described by the Choctaw phrase Okla Humma. In his sophomore film, Sterlin Harjo takes viewers on a road trip through his own personal Oklahoma, which includes an eclectic mix of humanity. Irene and Frankie have a difficult past, but Frankie needs Irene to help him with one task. He needs to get out of the hospital and go home to his daughter and new grandbaby to make amends. Irene had been his one, true, on-again, off-again love until they parted ways for good. But to make up for the past, Irene agrees to help him in this trying time. In this sparingly sentimental and achingly poignant film, Harjo claims his place as one of the most truthful and honest voices working in American cinema today. Monday, April 11 – SHENG ZHIMIN: NIGHT OF AN ERA (ZAIJIAN WUTUOBANG) – 8PM
Night Of An Era is part of the multi-venue series Between Disorder and Unexpected Pleasures: Tales from the New Chinese Cinema. “Cui Jian, Dou Wei, Tang Dynasty: these legendary musicians created the Chinese independent rock movement of the 80s. Some, like the pioneering artist Ke, died in their early twenties. Others must now survive in a different world, subjected to a new reality of unbridled capitalism, piracy and changing popular tastes. Sheng Zhimin’s first documentary, after the critical success of Bliss is a paean to the music and spirit of that era, as well as a reminder that, despite adversity, Chinese rock lives on!” – Hong Kong International Film Festival. Sheng Zhimin (born 1969) became involved in film in the early 1990s, and worked as a line producer, screenwriter and assistant director for Zhang Yang’s Spicy Love Soup (1997), Jia Zhangke’s Platform (2000), Fruit Chan’s Durian, Durian (2000) and Public Toilet (2002). His first film, Two Hearts (2003), was shown at the Berlinale.His second feature, Bliss (2006), won the NETPAC Award in Locarno.

Echo Park Film Center invites you to a special screening by two Los Angeles filmmakers who also happen to live under the same roof. The program features selected films by Clay Dean as well as the 10-year anniversary screening of Tuni Chatterji’s experimental musical, Twitterpated. Friday, April 15 – THE OATH – Launch of PBS POV series at EPFC – 8PM
Filmed in Yemen and Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, The Oath interweaves the stories of Abu Jandal, Osama bin Laden’s former bodyguard, and Salim Hamdan, a prisoner at Guantánamo facing war crimes charges. Directed by Laura Poitras (Flag Wars, POV 2003; the Oscar®-nominated My Country, My Country, POV 2006), The Oath unfolds via a narrative rife with plot reversals and betrayals that ultimately leads to Osama bin Laden, 9/11, Guantánamo and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sunday, April 17 - UNDERGROUND U.S.A. - 7:30 and 9:30 PM
Underground U.S.A., written and directed by Eric Mitchell, stars Patti Astor as a fading superstar of the 60s, Rene Ricard as her devoted companion and Mitchell as a male hustler without affect, and includes cameos by Cookie Mueller, Taylor Mead and Duncan Smith. Day is night and pose is everything as the characters drift through the club scene, fashion shows and art openings until the fun is over and appearance trumps reality. First released in 1980, Underground ran for six months at the St Mark's Cinema, was screened at the Museum of Modern Art and broadcast on PBS's Channel 13 and BBC's Channel 4. Monday, April 18 – LIGHT ON SURFACE, REFLECTION ON SCREEN: RECENT JAPANESE 8MM FILMS – 8PM
Light on Surface, Reflection on Screen is a survey of contemporary Japanese 8mm works, ranging from personal documentary to experimental film, showing artists’ interests in materiality, medium, and filmmaking techniques, while exploring the aesthetics of moving images with this small format. Joe and his girlfriend Evey dream of hitting it big on Broadway. When Joe lands an opportunity to write for an Off-Broadway musical, he is forced to cast either the love of his life or Summer, his newly discovered muse. King Dong dips us into the aesthetically manicured world of never-known comedy filmmaker Len Cella. Making films and videos since the 1960s, this one-man production unit makes the lowest-brow art with all the seriousness of an auteur. His apartment is a living film set, his day job as a house painter is interrupted by stints on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and growing old only makes him stronger- physically and artistically. Come take a VHS-tinted glimpse into Broomall, Pennsylvania’s comedy shorts anti-legend. Friday, April 22 – TRANS-FEMINIST MEDIA NIGHT: FEATURING MAKESHIFT RECLAMATION AND IMMEDIATE JUSTICE – 8PM
Join us for an exciting evening of new works by queer feminist media collectives! Makeshift Reclamation is a multimedia event showcasing how contemporary feminists are resisting and creating alternatives to not only gender-based oppression but also a collapsing economic system, climate crisis, and more. Featuring live readings, performances, and video works by artists and activists including Jessica Hoffmann, coeditor/copublisher of the independent, transnational, antiracist feminist magazine make/shift; Hilary Goldberg, whose new project, reclamation, is a Super 8 experimental documentary/narrative film in which queer superheroes navigate a future beyond capitalism; and many more. Saturday, April 23 – FILM JOURNEYS: IT FELT LIKE A KISS – 8PM
A new monthly screening series and cine club highlighting emerging trends in contemporary world cinema, the film will be followed by open discussions that will consider the techniques and strategies used in each film. This month's film is It Felt Like A Kiss by director Adam Curtis. Curtis uses a fast-paced documentary style, bringing together brilliant montages of movie clips and found footage along with progressive theses about key people and ideas in Western culture to create a fascinating tribute to American pop music and culture in the 60's. D TOUR, directed by Jim Granato, is a powerful, evocative and deeply personal story. Combining a band road trip with a personal quest for an organ donor, the film follows the journey of Pat Spurgeon, a talented indie rock musician on the rise, whose life becomes consumed with the care and feeding of his failing kidney. Spurgeon, a previous kidney transplant recipient, is part of the organ donor / recipient community, a special group whose lives become entwined in life and death. On one side are those who are saved through tragedy or by an incredible gift from a living donor; on the other are the families of the donors, who are offered a chance for hope and bittersweet resolution for their loss. D TOUR is filled with unexpected twists and the joys and sorrows of life. Filmmaker, Matthew Corey, premiers his latest documentary, Son of Steal this Book, which follows the exploits of Abbie Hoffman’s oldest son Andrew, who now lives in Jakarta, Indonesia with his wife and two kids. It explores how his unique relationship with his father affected the direction his life has taken. There will be a Q & A with the filmmaker and several other shorts by independent filmmakers will also be screened including: Joseph D’Angora’s Tree People, Michael Angel’s Broken Hart, Steve Keyes’ True Glitz, and David Diaz’ Change. Saturday, April 30 – PINHOLE AND THE CHEMISTRY OF FILM LECTURE & SCREENING – 5 PM
Navigating the space between science and art, Tristan Duke presents creative research into optics and photochemistry: treating the history of the pinhole as a tool for human understanding of light; introducing simple camera construction; and describing the sub-atomic journey of the film process (from silver halide, to latent image, to finished film). The lecture will be accompanied by hand-drawn illustrations. Followed by a screening of Ziggurat. After an ominous dream, the filmmaker and his teacher depart for the San Luis Valley in search of the Ziggurat –a journey that will lead each to confront their own mortality. Shot in the course of two days on 16mm film, using a homemade pinhole camera, the film is a metaphysical documentary that explores the desolate spiritual landscape of Colorado’s San Luis Valley.
